My coaching approach

Swimming is a highly technical sport which also requires us to control our breathing because some of the time we are under water! And sometimes we are in very cold water. This makes it very challenging but also incredibly rewarding.

In open water swimming the technical difficulties can increase because now we are swimming in moving water that may be cold or not very clear, there are no lanes, the water may be choppy or it could be raining. But all these difficulties are outweighed by the incredible experience of swimming in open water. It might be swimming in the mediterranean, in your local river, lake or organised open water swim venue.

As your coach or when I am coaching small groups I will typically observe, enhance, encourage and challenge. At the beginning of the coaching, we will set your goals for your open water swim together.

I prefer teaching by being in the water myself, modelling what I want people to achieve, creating a safe and trusting environment where the fun of swimming is a given. Above all my coaching is about you coming away feeling more confident about starting or developing your open water swimming, to feel motivated to put in the work and to have had a great experience.

If you are a first time open water swimmer, I want to give you the confidence to go and have a swim yourself. If you are planning for an open water swim race or a triathlon the coaching will give you the skills and the motivation to enhance your training.

For me as a swimmer and a coach it’s a continual process of learning, putting skills into practice, and getting the feedback from swimmers that drives me on.
